How Mosquitoes Detect and Locate Their Prey

Female mosquitoes must have blood to start their reproductive process. That’s why they bite you and the males don’t. The females have incredibly good senses for locating you. Mosquitoes can detect carbon dioxide that you exhale, lactic acid that your body gives off, and even sweat from 100 feet away. 

If your clothing is a different color than your surroundings, mosquitoes can find you. They can even detect body heat. You don’t stand a chance against their bag of tricks. 

When mosquitoes bite you, you run a risk of getting West Nile Virus, a very serious disease.
